Cirque du Bazaar

Art festivals are plentiful during summertime in C-town, but where does that leave creative types and their devotees during the colder months?  They all head indoors for smashingly quirky fetes like Cirque Imaginaire, which features all things wearable, presentable and edible at the Sachsenheim, the century-old Saxon home on Denison Avenue.  Check out the day-long festivities, beginning at 4 pm on Saturday, March 27, as this traveling showcase of local artists take over the ballroom/dance hall/solarium.  Everything from jewelry, pottery and murals, to chocolates, textile works and robot pals are up for grabs.  Local bands, including Safari, will perform live.  As for the building itself, it's a treaure that, until five years ago, wasn't even open to the public.  Sachsenheim hosts everything from performance art and concerts to shindigs like this art gallery/bazaar; if you haven't been there yet, you're missing a real treat.  Fancy antediluvian digs and inspired artistry?  Then Cirque Imaginaire is a twofer.  Be sure to also check out www.clevelandhandmade.com.

It's as if Etsy left the virtual world for an incarnation on the west side of Cleveland.  Artist Erin Carek says she decided to launch what she hopes will become a series of art and crafts bazaars around Cleveland because of one of the galleries that carried her work--Lakewood's Moto Gallery--shut its doors earlier this year.  So she's imagined Cirque Imaginaire: sales in different locations around town throughout the year.  She says 32 artists are committed to the first one, from 4-9 p.m., Saturday, March 27, at Sachsenheim Hall (7001 Denison Ave.), with more coming all the time.  "It was way more response than I was expecting," she says.  Casual Encounters, Safari, and Bafflegab will provide music.  Admission is free.  Go to cirqueimaginaire.com for more information.

Yesterday I went to the Sachsenheim for Cirque Imaginaire, a traveling art gallery.  There were a lot of arts & crafts packed into the hall, and I squeezed through the throngs witha  giant mug of beer.

Two booths really caught my eye, the t-shirts from Psycho Reindeer, and Erin Carek's science-fiction collage work.  I picked up the set of rocketman coasters from her.  Erin is also responsible for organizing the art show.  The addition of a few good bands helped make the night a great time.  Here are the bands:

* Bafflegab
* Safari

* How to Breathe Underwater

And here are a few of the folks who had stuff I liked:

* S Type Creative
* Coterie
* White Dragon Paper
